Concert Review:
The RCES was once again on the forefront for promoting a cultural event on the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand. The Hungarian brothers Olah and Geza gave renditions of 11 virtuoso compositions ranging from the middle of the 16th right up to the 20th century
The violin playing of Olah is best described being extraordinary virtuous, transparent, mastering his 18th century Italian violin technically to perfection, musically as well as inspirationally. His stage presence is all times modest; but present he most certainly is and his music renditions are nothing short of extraordinary. Olah, a student of the "Franz Liszt Music Academy", the renowned musical "Valhalla" in Budapest, Hungary is a multiple competition winner and took advise in master classes from the likes of Denes, Menuhin and Yo-Yo Ma, or the Mozarteum in Salzburg amongst many more. The Franz Liszt Academy paved the career paths through the extraordinary talents of their teachers, which comprised such immortal musical capacities like Weiner, Dohnany, Hubay, Bartok, Kodaly and turned out innumerable world-class performing artists of the likes of Vasary, Annie Fischer, Anda, Martzy, Solti, Ormandy, Fricsay (the father of our club member), Kertesz, just to name a few.
Vilmos Olah played with verve and intuition, rarely heard to that level of perfection anywhere in the world, let alone in Pattaya. The cadencies ever so touching refined, deep rooted scales flawless, the pizzicatos precise and purposeful, the multi string bow technique and finger virtuosity impeccable, the realization in finesse of musical and instrumental artistry were simply from another planet brought to us by Vilmos with a humble devotion to what the composers transfixed in their immortal compositions for mankind to enjoy. Some of the tunes have become eternal for they were performed by Kreisler, Heifetz, Milstein, Menuhin, Oistrach, Stern, Mutter or Perlman and many more. These works of musical immortality came our way (for program details above), when rendered and performed on the 13th and 14th of March 2008 at the Grand Ball Room of the Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa by Vilmos Olah.
There were too many highlights in this choice program to mention here, but it is fair to observe that a highlight must be "La Dance des Lutins" by Riccardo Bazzini, which by most violinist is considered too difficult to perform life on stage (possibly today there are only 6 or maximum 10 violinists who dare). Vilmos Olah did so with a smile thrown in for good measure.
Tears during the rendition where seen in some eyes of the enthusiastic public. They thanked Olah and Geza Vilmos with generous, thunderous applause, standing ovations and numerous curtain calls at the end of the concerts.
The eminent local music critic Paul Strachan observed in his review in appropriate words when he wrote: "With the first note played, the audience could sense that they were about to be treated to something very special. And special it was".
Now on a slightly different note
The RCES proposes a very special, thoughtful present by Rotarians for Rotarians and friends.
